How a Transistor Works

A transistor is an electrically controlled switch with no moving parts: a small voltage on one terminal decides whether current can flow between the other two. Picture a garden hose with a foot pedal. Water (the main current) wants to flow from one end to the other, but the pedal (a small control signal) decides whether the path is open or blocked. Press lightly, a trickle; press hard, full flow; release, nothing. The key magic is that a tiny effort on the pedal controls a much larger flow: that's amplification. Stack billions of these switches and you can build logic: 'output on only if both inputs are on' and so forth. That's literally how a computer chip thinks, in on/off patterns, which is why transistors are the atom of the digital world.
