The Mole Concept

A mole is just a counting word for chemists, like 'dozen' means 12 or 'pair' means 2. One mole means 6.022 x 10^23 of something. That number (Avogadro's number) is huge because atoms are tiny. Why invent it? Because chemists can't count atoms one by one, but they can weigh things. The mole links the invisible world of atoms to the grams you can measure on a scale. Conveniently, one mole of an element weighs its atomic mass in grams: 1 mole of carbon is 12 grams, 1 mole of water is 18 grams. So a recipe like '2 H2 + O2 -> 2 H2O' can be read as '2 moles of hydrogen react with 1 mole of oxygen', and now you can turn that into actual grams to measure out.
