The Scientific Method

The scientific method isn't a rigid seven-step recipe; it's a loop for not fooling yourself. You notice something, guess an explanation, then actively try to prove your own guess wrong.
The crucial move is that the guess (hypothesis) must be testable and falsifiable: it has to predict something that could fail. 'Invisible dragons that leave no trace live here' isn't science because nothing could disprove it. 'This fertiliser makes plants grow taller' is, because you can grow plants with and without it and compare.
You run the test, ideally with a control group to isolate the one thing you changed. If reality disagrees with your prediction, the idea loses, no matter how much you liked it. If it survives many honest attempts to break it, you trust it more, but never absolutely. Science is less about proving things true and more about ruthlessly discarding what's false.
