The Placebo Effect

The placebo effect is when a fake treatment (a sugar pill, a saline shot) produces a real, measurable improvement, purely because the person believes it will help.
It isn't 'all in the head' in a dismissive sense. Expecting relief can trigger genuine biology: the brain releases its own painkillers (endorphins), stress hormones drop, and attention shifts away from symptoms. Ritual matters too: a pill taken from a confident doctor works better than the same pill handed over casually.
This is exactly why drug trials need a control group. If people on the real drug improve, some of that improvement might be placebo, not the chemical. Only by comparing against a placebo group can researchers isolate what the drug itself actually does. The flip side, the 'nocebo' effect, is just as real: expecting side effects can produce them.
