Think of a leaf as a tiny solar-powered kitchen. The chef is chlorophyll, the green pigment that grabs sunlight. The raw ingredients are carbon dioxide (breathed in through tiny pores called stomata) and water (pulled up from the roots). Using the captured light energy, the kitchen runs two shifts. The first shift (the light reactions) splits water and stores energy in two rechargeable batteries called ATP and NADPH, releasing oxygen as a leftover. The second shift (the Calvin cycle) spends those batteries to staple CO2 molecules together into glucose, a sugar the plant can eat or store. So the one-line summary: sunlight + water + CO2 -> sugar + oxygen. Plants are literally building food out of air and light.
