The Industrial Revolution was, at its core, a change in where power came from. For all of history before it, work was done by muscles (human or animal), water, and wind. Then, around the 1760s in Britain, coal-fired steam engines let humans command huge amounts of energy on demand. With cheap, movable power, you could run machines that spun thread and wove cloth far faster than any hand. Factories clustered workers around these machines. Steam engines on rails and ships shrank distance and time. Populations moved from farms to cities. The knock-on effects were enormous: mass production, wage labour, pollution, and a jump in living standards that eventually spread worldwide. It's less a single invention than a chain reaction set off by controllable energy.
