How Vaccines Work

A vaccine is a training exercise for your immune system, run with a harmless stand-in instead of the real, dangerous germ. Your immune system learns by example. The first time it meets a germ, it fumbles for days figuring out a matching antibody, which is why you get sick. But afterwards it keeps memory cells, so next time it recognises the invader instantly and crushes it before you notice. A vaccine hands the immune system a safe preview: a dead germ, a weakened one, or just a recognisable piece (like a protein or the mRNA recipe to make that protein). No real disease, but the immune system still files away the memory. So if the real germ ever shows up, your body already has the antibody blueprint ready and wins the race.
